This question stops me in my tracks by its genuineness. Whoever you are, dear friend, or those of you who may feeling the same way, God must be so touched by your question. It is so humble.
I am reminded of Mary at the Annunciation and the call she received from God. Her first question to the Angel was, “How can this be?” No doubt she meant, "How can it happen that I would carry the Messiah within me when I have not been with a man?" But I think even more, she was saying, “How can it be that you would choose ME to be the mother of the Messiah we have awaited for so long? Why would you ever choose such an ordinary young Jewish girl like me?"
So, dear friend, with this thought in your mind, you are in good company — and this is actually a very good sign! God is not calling PERFECT people to be disciples and workers in the vineyards. You have probably heard the expression, “God doesn’t call the qualified; God qualifies the called.”
Having a positive sense of humility means that we avoid the extremes of having a low view of yourself on the one hand, and on the other hand, thinking you are God's gift to the universe. What I hear in your question is a bit of that humility of Mary that wonders how God could choose you in your “lowliness,” your ordinariness. God can do GREAT things with a willing heart!
It’s God’s grace that does the best work — through and with us. As you think about your calling, know that God has given you exactly the gifts and talents needed for the life and ministry God has in mind for you. The secret is a willing, generous heart, a heart that wants to love God and God’s people without reservation. That actually is pretty EXTRA-ordinary!
